Before approaching the guard to pass, it is a good idea to have a strategy in mind. It is never smart to give your opponent the grips and guard they prefer and work to pass from there. Braulio shows one way to approach which allows him to immediately setup grips that enable him to work what he calls the fan pass (also known as the longstep pass) versus the leg lasso. He also reveals a detail for making your grips more secure.
