Braulio talks about the three stages that can exist in any position in BJJ, positive, negative and neutral. He points out that for you to go from positive to negative or negative to positive, you must always pass through neutral first. You can use this knowledge to help yourself stay ahead in the game. For example, in order for your opponent to take you from a position where you are in control to a position where they are in control, they must pass through neutral. If you recognize this, as soon as they take you into a neutral position, switch things up to bring yourself back to the positive before they can take the next step which might put you in the negative.
